Nationally acclaimed author, educator shares inspirational story with students, staff at Baldwin Community Schools
BALDWIN, Mich. — Baldwin Community Schools students and staff heard from author, educator and former at-risk youth Brandon Fleming as he shared his personal journey of overcoming struggles and obstacles to becoming a Harvard University debate coach and educational leader.
Baldwin hosted Fleming for two sessions on Friday, Sept. 23. One talk was designed for students, and another was tailored to staff.
“We were honored to host such an accomplished educator in-person at Baldwin,” said Superintendent David Forrester. “Brandon serves as a wonderful role model, and his story of struggle, overcoming, resilience and success is truly an inspiration to our students and staff.”
Fleming spoke to students about overcoming a troubled past that included being disciplined at school, disliking teachers, and a violent home life to become an assistant debate coach at Harvard University. He encouraged students not to take educational opportunities for granted. Fleming spoke to the Baldwin Community Schools’ staff about building relationships with kids to break down walls. He reiterated that staff must meet students where they are, both socially and academically. He has since penned a memoir and founded The Veritas School of Social Sciences, an Atlanta-based college prep organization that helps set up youth for success in college and careers.
Fleming trained underserved youth to compete in Harvard’s international summer debate camp for middle and high school students. Since he started his program in 2017, Fleming’s teams have won every year.
“It was inspiring to see someone who looks like me become so successful and help other kids get into and excel in Ivy League schools,” said senior, Bre’Indel Watkins. “Hearing from Mr. Fleming gives me the confidence that I can achieve great things if I’m willing to work hard and focus on achieving my goals.”
